Midday press briefing from 20/04/2026

Show transcript

Esthers Hungarian Television, I would like to know whether you have an update on the Commission's negotiations in Hungary at the weekend,

and the second one on the Druzhba pipeline.

The outgoing Prime Minister in Hungary posted that the pipeline can be restarted today. Could you confirm this, please? Thank you. Thank you for your questions. So in response to your first question.

As we have already said,

last week a high level delegation from the European Commission was in Budapest to meet the incoming Hungarian Government.

These meetings were extremely constructive and positive in tone.

They were a very useful starting point for the necessary work that now needs to happen,

particularly in order to unblock funds for the benefit of the Hungarian people.

In relation to your second question, Concerning the Druzhba pipeline. All I can say is this.

The Commission is following the situation very closely, as we have been at all times, but now also,

I can confirm that we have been in contact with the concerned parties to facilitate the resumption of oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline.

We will continue engaging with all sides so that things continue moving in the right direction, and finally,

I should also recall that the Commission has called on all Member States to honour their commitments given at the last December Council as regards the loan for Ukraine. Please go ahead. There are.

It's a follow up, so you don't have any confirmation that the Druzhba pipeline is going to work as of today,

and also about this trip of the Commission's team to Budapest,

could you please elaborate on that because I saw only readout on the.

Commission's website, but have you received the position of new Hungarian government on Ukraine related questions such as enlargement,

such as 20 sanctions of 20 package of sanctions and about loans you mentioned already. Thanks. Thank you for those questions.

Unfortunately, I don't have anything new to tell you beyond what I already said.

First, on Druzhba, as I said, the Commission has at all times tried to fulfil.

A coordinating role here, a mediating role to try and move this issue forward, and that is what we are doing right now.

So we have at all times been in contact with the concerned parties.

We remain today in contact with all concerned parties.

Our goal is to continue moving this forward in a positive direction.

That is what we will continue to do, and I won't be providing more details from this podium today.

Second, on the high level delegation that met the incoming Hungarian Government last week. That was a very important first contact. Contact is continuing.

We won't be providing more detail on the blow by blow basis of that contact.

But the point here is that we are engaging with the incoming Hungarian Government.

To move forward on a range of issues that for too long have been blocked.

That is our commitment, and that is what we will continue to do. Go ahead.

Thank you, it's a follow up on the negotiations in Budapest.

I understand you're not going into the details, but I still want to know how far,

you know, Hungary's safe application was mentioned and what was discussed, if you could provide. Thank you for your follow up question.

I have nothing to add to what I have previously said. Other questions on this topic, David.

Thank you, thank you all of David Carretta on, on the Druzba pipeline.

Since, an agreement was announced between The European Commission President,

the European Council President and the President of Ukraine on the fact that the reparation of the pipeline would have been paid by the EU budget.

I would like to know, for the benefit of transparency, who is paying for that. Thank you, David.

Thank you for your question, but I've been very clear that we're not going to provide, more detail at this stage beyond what I have said.

We are at a very important moment in moving these questions forward.

There will be a time where we can provide more detail.

When that time comes, you'll be first in line, but right now we're not going to say anything beyond what I have already said.

With that in mind, dear colleagues, do you have other questions for me on this topic, because I'm going to keep saying the same thing over and over again. Go ahead. Hi, good afternoon. This is Gregorio Sorgi from Politico. On the safe application.

Given that you don't want to go into the details, at least, could you provide a clarification as to why there has been no decision taken on the Hungarian application, because from what has been said in the past,

technically all the issues were cleared and the application was was in a good place to be to be approved and it was blocked for political reasons and then returning to the high level. Visit in Budapest.

The Hungarian representatives have said that their goal is to send to present their revised RRP when during the first visit to Brussels,

which will likely be held in May.

Can you confirm that this is the timeline that has been discussed with the representatives of the new Hungarian government? Thank you for your questions.

On your second question, I have nothing to add to what I have previously said. We provided a readout from the meeting. That took place last week. Contact continues with the incoming administration.

We are not going to provide a blow by blow account of every single issue.

We will be in a position to say more when we're in a position to say more.

And at that point we will say more.

On your first question, I refer you to Thomas. Thank you, Olof. Yes, and thanks for the question. On the first question.

No, I firmly rebut the fact that it has been blocked for political reasons.

We have never, and we have been very clear from this podium, we have not blocked any safe plan.

What was needed indeed for some of them, it was a revision and work was ongoing.

There were bilateral contacts and they are still with the incoming now government contacts still on the remaining safe plan.

It has not yet been approved, but it has not been blocked.

Thank you, Thomas, do we have other questions on this topic? I don't see hands raised.

Do you have other questions for Thomas on the many files he covers? No, thank you, Thomas.

In that case, I'll jump online to Momchil.
