The investment is part of a broader upgrade of the section Ljubljana-Divača, the main section of the railway Ljubljana-Sežana-State Border, built between 1846 and 1857, as part of the “Southern Railway” Vienna-Trieste.
The section is the main connection of the Primorska region to central
Slovenia and is part of two TEN-T corridors: Mediterranean and Baltic-
Adriatic.
The works are expected to be completed in 2025, resulting in 16.3 km of upgraded railway infrastructure that meets the following requirements: enhancing rail fluidity by removing bottlenecks, upgrading lines and stations in accordance with the technical specifications for interoperability.
For the specific project involving the upgrade of the Borovnica railway station and the section between Brezovica and Borovnica, the Recovery and Resilience Facility provided funding of EUR 44.5 million, while the total value of the investment was EUR 112 million.
