The Reference Material Production Laboratory (RMP) at the Joint Research Centre is a specialised facility dedicated to the development and production of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) in support of European legislation. Reference materials provide laboratories with well-characterised benchmarks to ensure accurate, harmonised, and traceable measurement results across a wide range of applications.
Expertise in material processing, homogeneity and stability assessment, and advanced characterisation techniques is essential to guarantee the highest metrological standards. The laboratory covers the full production chain, from material preparation and pilot-scale processing to value assignment and quality control, responding to the growing global demand for complex and often biologically derived materials.
Through its scientific and technical role, the JRC strengthens measurement harmonisation in the EU by operating a modern facility designed to prevent cross-contamination and enable parallel processing. With dedicated laboratories for biochemistry, elemental analysis, and water materials, as well as controlled processing areas and in-process quality control, the RMP ensures the reliable supply of reference materials needed for the effective implementation of EU legislation.
