Hi, my name is Razvan Buda
I’m the deputy head of unit
at the Nuclear Safeguards and Security
and the head of analytical service
at the JRC in Karlsruhe.
I work on one of the areas
that was instrumental for the creation
of the JRC, nuclear safeguarding.
Nuclear safeguards are measures
that are implemented
to prevent and to detect the misuse
of nuclear materials for non-peaceful purposes.
Solid nuclear safeguards
relies on advanced technologies for
surveillance and monitoring
on one hand,
but also on accurate measurements
of materials on the other hand.
One of my duties is to manage
the JRC laboratory responsible
for performing the analyses of the samples
coming from nuclear facilities.
I lead and supervise
the performance of our team,
both in technical
and human performance,
driving it to the excellence.
My work helps to ensure that nuclear material
remains in civil and peaceful
purposes, such as power generation
or medical applications.
As an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory,
we have to participate
in inter-laboratories comparison exercises.
Our laboratory consistently ranks
between the top performers.
It's like participating at the Olympics
for scientific excellence,
and it is very cool to stay on the podium
between the top performers
I develop and apply
analytical techniques
to support nuclear safeguards,
which is also a key element
in the international peace.
The place where I can pursue
my scientific interest
and I directly see the impact
that my work has on
the lives of Europeans.
