My name is Agnes and I work in the field
of public health here at JRC Geel, Belgium.
My work focuses on evidence-based
cancer screening recommendations.
I work in the field of breast and colorectal cancer,
but my team also works,
for example, on cervical cancer,
and we’re expanding even further,
so we are working also on lung,
prostate, and gastric cancer.
My main tasks are related
to the development of the guidelines,
but it involves many steps.
For example,
I need to coordinate a group of experts
who come from different fields,
but I also need to
evaluate critically the clinical trials,
I need to really
be sure that the guideline
recommendations are aligned
with the latest research and evidence.
My job is meaningful because it helps
to save lives.
Cancer screening needs to be safe,
effective, and accessible to everyone
and also provided with the highest quality.
What I’m most proud of is actually
that I can contribute to the
European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer,
which is actually affecting
and saving millions of women’s lives in Europe.
The coolest thing about my job is really
when I can see that
the piece of guideline
I have been working on
is contributing to the cancer
screening programs in Europe.
And this is the real impact
that I can do in my job.
I work to develop
cancer screening guidelines
so that they are based on the best
available science.
The JRC for me is actually where great people
work on the science,
which sometimes can
be very abstract, but here at JRC
we actually make this into something
real, which is in this case
we make healthcare better for everyone.
