The European Union and Canada met today in Brussels to sign two landmark agreements, the EU-Canada Strategic Partnership Agreement and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, also known as CETA.
CETA will remove over 99% of tariffs that hinder trade between the EU and Canada. It is expected to boost trade between the two by €12 billion per year, and to generate growth and new jobs on both sides of the Atlantic. The agreement preserves governments' powers to regulate, especially with regard to environmental and social standards.
The agreement comes with a joint interpretative instrument that will help citizens understand better the meaning and terms of the agreement.
