The EU-funded IdroLIFE project aims to improve the conservation of fish species in the Toce river basin in the Italian Western Alps. The river contains multiple barriers that were built in the recent decades to divert water for hydroelectricity or to control erosion. Thus, the river is disconnected at several places which impede the migration of fish populations up and downstream (from Lake Maggiore to the river). Through restoration of the river, the project will bring back a stretch of the river to its natural state allowing the fish to migrate.
