Reducing emissions from the shipping sector - Forsea ferry, converted from diesel to electricity
The conversation from traditional heavy oil to electric propulsion by batteries of two passenger and goods ferries owned by ForSea was funded by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility. The project has brought a more environmentally friendly solution to a very busy maritime link, connecting the ports of Helsingør (Denmark) and Helsingborg (Sweden), across the Øresund strait. In addition to the ship conversion, the required power provision and charging stations in the ports were financed. Both ferry terminals are located in densely populated areas, so the project has contributed to significant improvements of air quality.
