Methanol is one of the alternative fuels being tested to help the shipping sector meet the EU’s carbon reduction targets. The methanol-fuelled passenger ferry Stena Germanica, operating between the ports of Gothenburg, Sweden and Kiel, Germany was converted from traditional marine fuel with financial support from the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) infrastructure programme. Port infrastructure to allow the bunkering of methanol was also EU funded.
