Everybody is talking about Mercosur. But what is it, and how does it impact the European economy, our industries, and our farmers?
In this explainer, we break down the landmark EU-Mercosur Agreement—a partnership that creates one of the world's largest free markets, connecting 720 million consumers across the EU, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
In this video, we answer:
Everybody is talking
about Mercosur.
But what is it?
And why does it matter?
What about European farmers?
Here's everything you need to know
about the EU Mercosur agreement.
“EU Mercosur”
“the EU Mercosur”
“that the EU Mercosur”
“partnership between Mercosur and Europe”
First things first.
Mercosur is an economic
alliance of South
American countries.
It includes Argentina,
Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
Think of it as their version
of the European
Union single market
What the Partnership
Agreement will do
is reduce
tariffs and taxes between them
and us. European exporters,
including farmers,
will be able to export
much more to Mercosur
and save over €4 billion
by paying fewer tariffs.
Exports to Mercosur
already support 600,000 EU jobs
and this will increase
thanks to the deal.
Now, if you clicked on this video,
you probably have
one question in mind.
What about European farmers?
For actions will be taken. One.
One.
The deal will boost the existing
EU agri-food
exports by removing
some very high tariffs
on wine and cheese,
just to name a few.
In fact,
our farmers are expected to export
50% more of their products.
Traditional European food products
will no longer be imitated
in the Mercosur countries
Two.
Only a very limited
amount of agri-food
products can be imported
into the EU
in the most sensitive sectors.
Take beef for example.
No more than 1.5% of the European
Union's production can be imported
annually at reduced tariff rates.
Three. Even more important.
Only food that meets the EU’s
strict health and safety
standards will be able
to end up on your plates.
This will be ensured
by even more controls.
Forur.
The EU has put in place
strong protections
as well as a €6.3 billion
safety net,
to support
farmers in case of need.
In short,
we are creating
one of the biggest free markets
in the world
with some 720 million
consumers altogether,
making it easier for companies
to trade goods and services.
Let's hear it
from the EU companies.
So from the regulation perspective
and from EU Commission,
we would definitely hope
for policies and support
for climate friendly technologies.
I think all the work that the EU is doing
with Mercosur
is extremely important.
It is a huge market,
it is an increasing opportunity for European companies.
When free trade agreements are put in place,
things become easier
for us as independent winegrowers
but also for the importer
for whom the procedures will be simpler.
EU and Mercosur agreement
will be a milestone for us,
for all South American
and for all Europeans.
It will be a reason
to go more and more into this
great market.
Communication and cooperation
with overseas countries are actually helping
in boosting your business
and therefore creating
jobs in your home country and the region
where you operate.
But it's not just
about the economy.
This agreement
brings you
closer to a group of trusted,
like-minded partners.
This really matters
in today's world.
The agreement will provide
stable, reliable access
to critical raw materials
like lithium, graphite or aluminum
needed to create the industries
and jobs of the future.
As a result,
our economic security
will be stronger.
So , now
you understand
what this agreement is about,
how it protects
our farmers and industries
and how it will impact our economy
and competitiveness.
