Energy security - how the EU is protecting its energy future

Show transcript

Energy.

A single word that powers our daily lives and our economy.

Because almost everything we do depends on it,

the European Union must guarantee secure and reliable energy supply at all times.

The EU is undergoing a major transformation of its energy system:

moving away from fossil fuels and investing

in homegrown renewable and low-carbon energy.

This will make our energy system cleaner,

more resilient, decarbonised and secure.

But for the time being, we still depend on imports for our energy needs.

The recent energy crisis highlighted the need for the EU to increase

our strategic autonomy to withstand external pressures.

In the face of threats like cyber, physical or hybrid attacks on infrastructure,

as well as extreme weather events,

EU energy security relies on prevention, preparedness, and solidarity.

Prevention means diversifying suppliers and energy sources.

Preparedness means strengthening cross-border connections,

developing protocols to cooperate in times of need, and building strong reserves.

EU countries maintain at least 90 days of emergency oil stocks,

and up to 35% of winter gas needs can be covered from storage.

To ensure a successful clean energy transition,

we also need to diversify our supply of the critical raw materials

that build its foundation.

By combining clean energy, resilient infrastructure,

and close cooperation,

the EU is building an energy future that is secure, sustainable,

and affordable for everyone.
