On 21 March 2024, Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of a stronger Europe in the World, participated in the Brussels European Council, which took place in Brussels, Belgium, and was chaired by Charles Michel, President of the European Council. Over the course of this summit, EU leaders gave an overview of the two years of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and reaffirmed their commitment to providing economic, financial, humanitarian, military and diplomatic support to Ukraine; they also welcomed the adoption of a 13th package of sanctions against Russia. On the conflict in the Middle East, the European Council called for an immediate humanitarian pause leading to a sustainable ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages and the provision of humanitarian assistance.Regarding the EU enlargement, , the European Council decided to open accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Building on the European Commission’s recommendation of 12 March 2024.Finally, the European Council reverted to the current challenges in the agricultural sector and concerns raised by farmers.
