On 5 December 2022, Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of the European Green Deal, travelled to Silesia, Poland, in order to meet with local leaders, representatives of coal regions and cities with carbon-intensive industries, civil society and citizens, and discuss just transition and new economic opportunities.On this occasion, Frans Timmermans namely met with Jakub Chełstowski, Marshal of the Śląskie Voivodship; Jerzy Buzek, Member of the EP, Anna Hetman, Mayor of Jastrzębie-Zdrój and participated in the Silesian Festival of Science in Katowice where he met with youth and students; and visited Hewalex, a leading solar collector and heat-pump manufacturer in the country.
The Silesia region is part of the five Polish regions selected to receive funding via the Just Transition Fund to support their transition to a climate-neutral economy.
