Chile – Solar Energy Plant
The Cerro Dominador Solar Power Plant (Spanish: Planta Solar Cerro Dominador) is a 210-megawatt (MW) combined concentrated solar power and photovoltaic plant located in northern Chile, in one of the sunniest places in the world, the Atacama Desert. The project is Latin America’s first combined solar thermal and photovoltaic system. The innovative solar thermal system uses the sun’s heat directly. 10,600 mirrors, known as heliostats, focus the sunlight onto a heat receiver on a 250m-tall tower. Co-financed by the EU, the system provides the Chilean electricity grid with green energy, thus saving tonnes of CO2 emissions.
