To improve air quality, new worldwide rules to reduce harmful sulphur emissions from ships entered into force on 1/1/2020. Sulphur emissions cause air pollution and are harmful to human health and the environment. In the EU, tight rules on sulphur emissions from ships have been in place since 2012. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) followed the EU approach and set 2020 as entry-into-force date of the global 0.5% sulphur cap on marine fuels (down from 3.5%).
