On 2 March 2026, in Brussels, Belgium, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, met with Guy Parmelin, President of the Swiss Confederation, to sign a comprehensive set of bilateral agreements between the European Union and Switzerland. These agreements aim to modernise the partnership between the two parties. They should facilitate the free movement of citizens, strengthen workers' rights and offer more opportunities to students. They also aim to support trade and business by ensuring fair conditions, bringing electricity markets closer together and creating a common area of food security. Finally, these agreements will enable Switzerland to participate in European programmes and cross-border health mechanisms, thereby contributing to a structured and sustainable partnership.
