These illustrations show Middelgrunden, an offshore wind farm in the Øresund strait between Denmark and Sweden, 3.5 km outside Copenhagen, Denmark. When it was built in 2000, it was the world's largest offshore farm, with 20 turbines (2 MW each). The wind farm produces up to 85,000MWh of power annually, which makes up about three percent of Copenhagen’s total power consumption. After 20 years of operation, the wind farm will now undergo renovation to extend its life for another 20 years. The aim is to use recycled parts as much as possible, thus tapping into the developing second-hand market for wind turbine parts.
