The Malfatti Commission held office from 01 July 1970 to 21 March 1972. Its mandate was marked by the relaunching of the process of European integration: the adoption of a financial framework for the EC and the completion of the Common Market; the development of political and monetary cooperation; and, the opening of talks with candidate countries (United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark and Norway) in view of the Community's enlargement. The Mansholt Commission held office from 22 March 1972 to 5 January 1973. Two major events marked this mandate: the creation of the European Monetary Snake (24 April 1972) and the first EC enlargement (1 January 1973).
